Welcome to Goodnotes! We're thrilled that you're interested in joining us.

Today, we are excited to announce the introduction of an AI literacy interview as part of our hiring process.

This interview is not a technical assessment, instead it's all about you. We are curious about the way you adapt to new trends, how you preserve critical thinking, and how you see AI shaping the future of work.

What Do We Mean by AI Literacy?

We define AI literacy as the ability to understand, utilize, and critically assess traditional and generative artificial intelligence technologies. It encompasses your knowledge, skills, and wisdom to ensure AI systems are used in effective and ethical ways.

AI literacy includes knowing when AI isn't the answer.

The most effective AI users aren't just prompt engineers — they're thoughtful curators who combine technical skill with taste and intention.

Why This Matters to Us

Did you know Goodnotes hired our first Machine Learning Engineer in 2016? Since then, we have built teams of ML research and AI product engineers to invest in a future where our product would help users work and learn smarter.

Today, AI is helping us draft faster, analyze smarter, and free up time for higher-value work. Integrating AI into our day-to-day has meant more than just adding tools. We’re investing time and resources to stay on the cutting edge, and you’ll never feel like you’re navigating AI alone — you’ll have support, guidance, and peers right beside you to help you get the most out of it.

If you want to work in a team that sees AI as an amplifier of human potential, alongside people who have been building for the future of work for over a decade, then Goodnotes is the place for you.

That’s also why, in our interview process, we’re curious to hear how you have been using AI in your work.

Talking AI in Interviews

To help us understand how you've been using AI and what you think about it, you'll have a 30-minute conversation with one of our AI Champions who are dedicated to supporting our AI transformation.

We’re curious about how you have been using AI for work and creativity, how you approach it, and how you see AI fitting into the future of work.

This is not a technical proficiency test, and it's not about how many tools you know. Think of it as a curiosity check that helps us understand your relationship with one of the most important technologies in the world today.

AI in Action at Goodnotes

From code review or note-taking, to custom agents, Goodpeople use AI every day to work smarter and better.

Here are some ways we’re putting AI in action.

1. Meet Our AI Champions

In each function, we have designated AI Champions whose job is to experiment with AI and discover ways it can enhance our work. They listen to what their colleagues need and help make sure they have the tools and support they need to succeed in a world transformed by AI.

2. One-Liners: Staying Transparent and Accountable

At Goodnotes, we believe transparency builds trust. That’s why we’ve introduced a simple practice we call “one-liners” — a short note added to the end of a document or deliverable that explains how AI was used.

For example:

“AI Used: [Tool] for [Purpose], ~[Estimated % of Output], Human-led [Key Judgment or Decision Point].”

This simple declaration promotes a culture of openness, helps us learn from each other, and also lets us understand where AI helps most. These little notes spark conversations, highlight creative uses of tools, and help us make smarter choices as a team.

3. A Peek Into the AI Tools We Use

From Claude Code and Cursor to Notion AI and Perplexity, we actively curate an AI toolkit to make sure everyone has the right tool for the right job.

We look for tools that align with ethical, legal, and cybersecurity best practices. Every tool we use has gone through extensive IT and legal review to set clear guardrails to ensure it is used safely and responsibly. Because while AI helps with the work, we believe it’s people who make the impact!

What Does This Mean for You?

We hope this blog post excites you about joining us at Goodnotes, and we also hope you understand why we evaluate AI literacy during the interview process.

We’re looking for people who understand AI’s limitations and are not afraid to explore how far it can go. Joining us means that:

  • You’ll become part of a culture where experimentation is encouraged and learning is shared; and
  • You'll be empowered to use AI as a tool to amplify your potential, not as a replacement for human ingenuity

If you've read this far and agree with our commitment to an AI future led by human creativity, judgment, and connections, we'd love to hear from you.
